German-born Ludwig Yehuda Wolpert immigrated to Palestine in 1933, where he taught metalworking at the Bezalel School for Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem. In 1956, he immigrated to New York to establish the Tobe Pascher Workshop for Jewish ceremonial objects at the Jewish Museum. He is particularly known for prominently incorporating Hebrew letters into his ceremonial art. These Sabbath candlesticks are inscribed with the Hebrew words “Remember” and “Observe,” which refer to the commandment to remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.
