Shofar

Ram’s horn
Central Europe, 19th century
Gift of Joseph B. and Olyn Horwitz

The shofar is an ancient musical horn that is blown in synagogue services on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and at the very end of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Like the modern bugle, the shofar lacks pitch-altering devices. The carved inscription on one side reads: “Blow in a big horn for our freedom.” The other side is inscribed: “To listen to the voice of the Shofar.”
